Housing in Seoul

Let's go over the type of housing you can get in Seoul, Korea.

For those of you that are coming from abroad, you'll likely choose from studio(one room), apartment, officetel, villa or service residence.




Studio(one room)

If you would like a small room with built-in appliances just for yourself, this would be a good option. Built-in appliances typically include refrigerator, laundry machine, closet, microwave and a stove. These type of studio or one room(in Korean) are popular among younger population. They are quite small but if you are on a budget, this would be a good option.



Apartment

Apartments in Seoul are the most popular choice of housing option among Koreans. There are wide range of types of apartments available in terms of sizes and prices. Newer apartments offer facilities such as swimming pool, sauna, gym, screen golf, squash, ping-pong, library, playground and café. This would be a good choice if you have a family since they offer 2-4 bedrooms with a spacious living room.



Officetel

They are usually located in a convenient location near the subway and it can be used as residential or commercial. So often times, you'll see some offices on some of the floors. They offer built-in appliances. This is a very popular choice among expatriates because it's a affordable choice for a person or two. They usually have convenient stores, restaurants and cafes on the first floor.




Villas

They are similar to a townhouse where it's no more than a 5-6 stories high. They are another affordable option if you need parking as they offer parking spaces on the first floor. They sometimes do not have an elevator or other facilities but maintenance is lower than other places.




Service Residence

This is a good option for those who are planning to stay for a short-term typically 3 months to less than a year. It's hotel-like place where it's usually fully furnished. This would be a good option for those who are staying by themselves but don't want to pay the hotel prices. It's a good choice for people who are coming in Korea for a business trip for couple of months. One of the downfall of this option is that you can not register the place as your residency with the government if you are planning to get an alien registration card.
